When you are debating bagged vs bagless vacuum cleaners, you should look at the advantages and disadvantages of each vacuum type.
Advantages of Bagged Vacuums
Consumer Reports recommends those with allergies to get bagged vacuums. The dust, debris and pet dander remain in the bag.
You can choose vacuum bags that act as additional air filters as air flows through the bag and exhaust, cleaning the air as you vacuum.
Bagged canister vacuums are more flexible, especially when you start using the more exotic tools that come with your vacuum cleaner. It is far easier to use upholstery, drapery, dusting and pet hair vacuum tools than an upright vacuum, and the bagged canister vacuums are superior at both sucking up and then containing the dirt and dander pulled in by the vacuum cleaner.
Disadvantages of Bagged Vacuums
Those with limited hand eye coordination may have trouble removing and installing vacuum cleaner bags.
A good bagged upright canister vacuum cleaner with a Consumer Reports recommendation will set you back at least two hundred dollars. The same is true for bagged canister vacuum cleaners. For example, the Consumer Reports best buys are the approx $200 Kenmore Progressive and approx $180 Hoover Windtunnel Max. A cheap bagged upright like the Dirt Devil Featherlite received a score of 50, a sharp drop from the best rated vacuum’s score of 73.
Bagged vacuum performance deteriorates as the bag fills up. And unlike most bagless vacuums, there isn’t a clear visual indication of when the bag is filling up.

Advantages of Bagless Vacuums
Bagless vacuums have the advantage of a lower lifetime operating cost, since you don’t have to buy replacement bags.
Bagless upright vacuums rated well by Consumer Reports are available for a little over fifty dollars. You no longer have to buy a three hundred dollar Dyson bagless vacuum to enjoy their convenience. For example, the bagless upright Hoover Wind Tunnel T-series is around $130. It is also a Consumer Reports best buy due to its performance. The Eureka Air Speed is about $100. The Bissell Cleanview Helix Deluxe is also only around a hundred dollars and scores only two points less than the Eureka.
Disadvantages of Bagless Vacuums
If there is a problem with the dust cup, such as a latch breaking, the dirt you just sucked up will fall on the floor. Some bagless vacuums have problems with a dirt cloud forming even when you empty the dust cup into the trash.
Consumer Reports says bagless vacuums should be avoided if you have asthma or bad allergies, precisely because of this problem.
If you want a bagless canister vacuum cleaner, you’ll pay more for a high performance vacuum than you would for a bagged canister vacuum cleaner. The Consumer Reports best buy bagged canister vacuums are $250 and $300. The only recommended bagless canister vacuum was $400. And none of the bagless canister vacuums was rated a Consumer Reports Best Buy due to a combination of high performance and low cost.
Observations in the Bagged Vs Bagless Vacuum Cleaners Debate
Reliability of a vacuum cleaner is more dependent on its brand than it is whether the vacuum cleaner is bagged or bagless. Kirby is the most reliable vacuum cleaner brand according to Consumer Reports. Electrolux, Riccard and Simplicity have the worst reliability.
Reliability also depends on the vacuum’s design. For example, Canister vacuums tend to have a lower average reliability than uprights, regardless of whether they are bagged or bagless.
