A good vacuum has adjustable features including height and beater bar speed. Typically, a vacuum that has larger wheels or is self-propelled is a better machine for carpet maintenance. Specialty tools help to get into corners, cracks and crevices as well as around the base of furniture.
Adjusting the height is a feature that you will need to find in a reliable vacuum for high pile carpet. You should be able to adjust the height of the vacuum so that the machine is not sinking into the carpet. If the vacuum is sitting too low in the carpet you won’t be able to move it around easily.
Suction in the vacuum needs to be good enough to pick up dirt, but not too powerful so that the vacuum may become bogged down. The suction should be strong enough so that dirt that is located as much as an inch and a half below the surface of the carpet will be picked up by the vacuum. If you have thick loop carpet or shag carpets you will need to be able to turn off the power head or beater bar so that the vacuum is only operating with suction.

High suction vacuums are simply not suitable for high pile carpet because the vacuum will be difficult or impossible to push. If you are not certain about the right height that the vacuum should be set at for your carpet, the beater brush should only lightly contact the surface of your carpet. If the beater bar is penetrating your carpet, then the height of the vacuum needs to be adjusted up. You certainly do not want the vacuum beater bar to damage the surface of your carpet and make it look worn or frayed. If you notice any fraying in your carpet, this is a great reason to take a look at the height of the vacuum.
Finding the right vacuum to care for your deep pile carpets is important because it will ensure that you can enjoy your carpet for years to come. Regular maintenance of your carpet will extend the life of the carpet and keep it looking new.

A lightweight vacuum would be a good option. Some of the Oreck vacuums are quite light.
