DuroMax XP10000E Power
DuroMax’s “MX2 Power Boost” is just a switch to go between 240/120 volt and 120 volt only modes. That’s not any different from other 240 volt capable generator. What does make this different is its ability to provide 100% power in 120 volt mode. That works out to a total of 83.33 amps of peak power and 66.7 amps of sustained power. Switch to 240/120 volt mode, and the 240 volt outlets provide 41.67 amps of maximum power and 33.33 amps of sustained power, leaving the rest of the generator’s capacity for 120 volt power. A built-in surge protector prevents sudden swings in output from damaging connected devices.
The engine in the 10000E is an 18 HP, 440cc OHV single cylinder built by DuroMax. It’s both EPA and CARB approved, so the generator can be used across the U.S. and Canada. While the engine is modern, the rest of the unit uses dated technology. The brushed generator is cheaper than a brushless generator, but it’s also larger, less efficient and requires occasional maintenance. The auto throttle doesn’t adjust engine speed to match the current load. Instead, it keeps the engine at 3,600 RPM under load, then drops the idle speed when there is no current draw. Despite this, owners can expect the 8.3 gallon gas tank to keep the 10000E running for 10.4 hours at 50% load. That’s in line with brushless generators in this category.
This model is easy to confuse with the DuroMax XP10000EH. Both generators look identical, but the EH is dual fuel, while this model only runs on gasoline.
DuroMax says this generator makes 72 dB of noise, but there’s no distance or load tied to this measurement. If it’s like similar open frame generators, expect actual noise output to be closer to 80 dB at the standard 10 feet and 50% load test used by other manufacturers.
What Do I Need to Set Up the DuroMax XP10000E?
Most of what you need comes in the box. DuroMax includes a tool kit with everything you need to put the generator together, along with a spark plug wrench, oil funnel and cables to connect to the 12 volt posts. They even throw in a couple plug heads to make your own cables for the high amp outlets. You will need to provide your own motor oil.
The 10000E uses a floating neutral, connecting the ground to the frame. This is fine for temporary outdoor use in most areas. It also supports an external ground connection for workplace use and to meet local safety regulations.
Unlike some open frame generators, the XP10000E comes with wheels and a fold down handle. You will need to bolt on the wheels during assembly, but the handle is fitted at the factory.
DuroMax doesn’t offer transfer switches, but this generator is transfer switch compatible. Sourcing a compatible switch shouldn’t be a problem when you have the generator connected to your home’s wiring system.
If you regularly use your generator at altitudes over 3,000 feet, it needs to be modified for high altitude use. DuroMax doesn’t offer a kit for the modifications. Instead, you will need to take the generator to a dealer.
Using the DuroMax XP10000E
Measuring 28 x 22 x 23 inches and weighing 218 lbs, this model is relatively compact considering its output and design. The engine has an electric starter, but the fuel switch and choke are manual. The engine needs to warm up for a few minutes before it’s ready to provide power.
The main circuit breaker must be turned off when connecting devices, or when switching between 120/240 volt modes. DuroMax warns owners that they can damage the generator if they accidentally flip the voltage switch with the main breaker turned on.
The fuel gauge is a see-thru window on top of the gas tank, while information on the control panel is limited to an analog voltage gauge and lights for low oil and internal battery recharging. You will need to log operating hours manually to keep on track with the maintenance schedule.
DuroMax recommends changing the oil every 20 hrs or every month. If you use this as an emergency backup, you may find it easier to change the oil just before you start the engine. Along with regular maintenance you’d expect on one of these devices, the brushes on the generator need to be replaced every 250 hours. They’re built into the automatic voltage regulator (AVR), so replacement only requires removing a couple bolts and swapping a couple connectors.
What Can I Power With the DuroMax XP10000E?
This generator doesn’t have a sine wave inverter, which means the power coming from the receptacles is “dirty.” Voltage fluctuations will burn out electronics connected to this device, although electric motors and appliances will work fine.
This is a great choice for workplace use. Since the electricity is single phase, it won’t power a 240 volt welder. However, by adding some extension cords to convert the high output plugs into a series of 5-20R outlets, you can power several tools at a time. External ground support lets it meet safety requirements for most workplaces.
It also works well for RV use with a few caveats. The variety of high output plugs makes it easy to connect to your rig’s shore power system. However, you don’t want to accidentally turn on a TV or plug in a computer while the generator is connected. With 8,000 watts on tap, you can power everything else in your vehicle, including refrigerators and large air conditioning units.
Likewise, you’ll find the same trade-offs with home backup power. Once you have the generator wired into a transfer switch, it can directly power everything in your household, aside from A/C and electric heaters. You may even be able to run a small electric water heater. Just make sure your TV, computer, internet router and anything else electronic is disconnected. That said, this unit is a popular choice for home backup due to its low price.
