Dyson 360 Eye

Dyson is already one of the leading vacuum cleaner manufacturers. Dyson’s canister vacuums are the second most reliable vacuums in that category according to the 2014 Consumer Reports buyer’s guide. How does that expertise and quality translate into the robot vacuum market?

Dyson 360 EyeThe Dyson 360 Eye is touted as a very intelligent robot vacuum. It has better be, given the $1000 price tag.

The vacuum battery lasts 20 minutes, a fraction of the time of competitors like Neato and Roomba. Dyson’s defense is that the battery life is offset by the high power of the vacuum; Dyson’s response is that vacuum that lasts two hours but doesn’t deep clean the carpets isn’t worth the money. This vacuum is supposed to use the same high quality cyclone as the well rated Dyson upright vacuums.

Forget the remote control for the vacuum cleaner; Dyson is app-enabled. You can enable it, schedule it and arrange spot cleaning via its app that works on both the iOS and Samsung’s Android phones. Theoretically, you could set up a webcam showing the vacuum’s adventures through the house or let the kids turn on the cameras and then vacuum itself to clean up the mess the cat made before Mom gets home.

The Dyson 360 Eye gets its name for the 360 degree camera on the top that maps its location in a room and helps it navigate while avoiding obstacles. The vacuum also has infrared sensors for detecting obstacles, mostly in low light situations. Then again, so does Neato.

Like the Powerbot VR9000, this vacuum has big wheels to allow it to get on that center rug or roll over power cords. In the Dyson 360 Eye’s case, the wheels have tank-like treads.
