In this column, we’ll do a review of the Dyson DC58 handheld cordless vacuum cleaner.
Pros of the Dyson DC58 Cordless Vacuum
- It has a boost mode to let you up the suction level when you need to get in deep crevasse or pick up heavier items. However, this does shorten battery life. Even without the power boost, it has more suction power than a Shark.
- It is powerful enough to vacuum the loose hair off your dog, assuming the noise doesn’t scare the animal.
- It is as bag-less as a Dyson upright vacuum. The nozzle is narrow enough to get between seats, under seats and around car seats, many of those niches where crumbs, mold and bugs tend to congregate and give parents nightmares. There are a few complaints that it doesn’t have a crevice tool, but you could use your upright Dyson’s crevice tool if it truly came to that.
It’s cordless! That’s a dramatic improvement over the corded shop vacuums many of us try to use to clean our cars. And it can even vacuum your keyboards and other electronics!
- The battery charges quickly.
Cons of the Dyson DC58 Handheld Vacuum
- The battery only lasts 20 minutes, and that’s without using Max mode. On Max mode, it may only last five minutes.
- This Dyson vacuum cleaner doesn’t have a wall mounting bracket, which is a hassle for some since you can’t store the handheld vacuum by hanging it on the wall. This feels like a let down because the commercials show a similar Dyson vacuum model that does have a wall mounting bracket.
- The Dyson vacuum costs around $250. Because the Dyson DC58 handheld vacuum was released in 2014, it is almost impossible to find a refurbished one that costs less than a new one. While the Dyson DC58 is incredibly powerful, there are less powerful competitors available at a lower prices, but cannot match the Dyson features.
Observations about the Dyson DC58 Handheld Vacuum
It weighs around three and a half pounds, standard for this type of vacuum cleaner.
This model came out in early 2014, so there is not yet much history on which to judge its reliability. The Dyson DC58 handheld vacuum has a two year warranty. Whether it lasts this long or has its complex two tier radial cyclones and digital motor start to fall apart after a year of use is yet to be determined.
The two tier radial cyclones mean you have 15 of them in total working together. This implies that if one or two stop working, the vacuum can still put out significant suction, but this is not actually known.
You need to be careful not to over-use the Dyson DC58. Like other Dyson handheld cordless vacuums, they will start running intermittently if they get overheated. Wait for the motor and cyclones to cool off after the unit has gotten hot. And you need to make sure the battery has cooled before you put it on the charger. This can be a hassle if you cannot finish the job in one pass.

Make sure the dust bin is closed tightly or it may spill while you’re climbing around trying to clean up debris.
