This latest iteration of the Roomba has moved away from the brush with rubber extractors for picking up dirt and pet hair. As a result, it is more effective in tackling minute debris and allows for even cleaner surfaces. In addition, it is also a much quieter machine that does not create a ruckus when it is turned on and working. Its predecessors have been quite lively cleaners as far as their noise level is concerned, but this problem is addressed with the iRobot Roomba 880.
The Bad - This nimble cleaning machine comes at a hefty price tag, which is an amount most people would feel uncomfortable spending on a vacuum cleaner. The bin, which was made larger than the previous Roomba units still fills up fast when picking up dust and pet hair around the house.
The Bottomline - Despite its price, the iRobot Roomba 880 is a highly capable and dependable machine that frees up the time you will otherwise have to spend manually directing a vacuum cleaner from one room to another. It pays for itself by providing unparalleled convenience and simplicity. That said, its closest competition, Neato Robotics XV Signature Pro (which sells for about $400), has an edge when it comes to collecting pet hair on various types of floor surfaces.
Design - This cleaning robot tips the scale at 8.4 pounds and has the same circular disc shape as its predecessors, albeit with a black finish and a convenient carrying handle for easy transport. It maintains its minimalistic and simple but sturdy construction that is designed to last many years.
Main Features and Product Specifications
High Performance Cleaner - This machine is specifically designed to effectively pick up pet hair, fur, dust, minute debris and other types of allergens that can compromise people’s health. What makes this unit powerful and efficient is the combination of new AeroForce extractors that ensures constant and unencumbered airflow. Unlike traditional vacuum cleaners that still depend on dust bags/bins, the iRobot Roomba 800 can maintain accelerated air flow regardless of the volume of dirt collected at any given time.
Compact and Light - While this machine is not really intended to be handled manually, it is still good to know that it is compact enough to fit in a small cabinet or even the underside of the bed. Those with small homes that do not even have a dedicated utility closet, this is a great choice.
No-Maintenance Required - What sets the iRobot Roomba 800 from any other vacuum cleaner in the market today is its innate self reliance. This machine does not need to be handled or monitored to ensure it does it job. In fact, it is designed so that users can pre-set it to automatically clean several rooms seven times per week, which translates to daily cleaning so you never have to come home to dirty floors. Cleaning up after pets also becomes a much easier job since this robot vacuum follows your furry friends and pick their loose hair up before you even notice.
iAdapt Responsive Navigation - This robot is programmed to find its own way around the home (or any home for that matter) based on its size, shape, and total area. There is no need to monitor its progress as the machine itself determines when it needs to go back and forth a few times to pick up extra dirt or debris. In addition, it also adjusts based on the type of floor surface, i.e. floor, tile, marble, travertine, carpet, etc.
Dirt Detect Series 2 - Roomba has redefined comprehensive and thorough cleaning with its built-in sensor that determines which areas need a second or third pass. Its brushless design proves to be even more effective in picking up dirt.
Dual Battery Options - For those extra long cleaning run times, the Roomba 880 robot vacuum provides an extended life battery option.
Remote-Control Operated - The cleaning trajectory of the Roomba 880 can be adjusted via infrared remote control so there is never a need to get up to move the machine yourself.
Full Dirt Receptacle Alert - The cleaner will alert you if and when the receptacle becomes full and in need of emptying. This is a one-step process that takes a few seconds.
Auto Docking Mechanism - The cleaner automatically returns to the dock for recharging between sessions.
Verdict and Recommendation
While there is a cheaper alternative to the iRobot Roomba 880, this machine still remains the most effective overall cleaner. Vacuum cleaners cost about half the price of the newest Roomba but they do not allow for the same level of convenience, particularly its mostly autonomous operation. If cleaning is something you despise, the Roomba robot vacuum can be the best little helper you can find on the market today.
