Oreck Magnesium RS Review

In this Oreck Magnesium RS review, we’ll look at the strengths and weaknesses of this particular Oreck model.

Pros of the Oreck Magnesium RS

  • The Oreck Magnesium RS has an unusual swivel head that lets it turn on a small radius like the Dyson. Its narrow profile and swivel design let it go nearly horizontal to vacuum under your furniture. It will slide in all the way under your bed.
  • It is light, just under eight pounds. This is a plus whether you have weak upper body strength, trouble carrying it up stairs or get tired when you vacuum the house. Can be used by anyone having joint pains or Arthritis.
  • Oreck Magnesium RSThe speed control is on the handle, so you don’t have to reach over to change the suction and motor speeds.
  • The wheels let the Oreck Magnesium RS transition from tile to carpet to thick pile rugs with minimal effort. The Oreck Magnesium RS is ideal for use on frieze carpets and shag carpets. It can tackle SmartStrand silk carpets with ease. The important thing to note here is that you have to use the lower speed setting for these long pile carpets. The vacuum will easily glide over these carpets without you putting too much effort.
  • Does an excellent job on tile, hardwood and laminate floors.
  • Its side brushes mean that it can clean up along the baseboards as you go. There’s no need to detach the vacuum from the base and crawl around trying to suck up the debris along the room’s edges.
  • The Oreck Magnesium RS has incredible suction power for its small size.
  • The Oreck doesn’t have the bagless design of a Dyson vacuum. And this is actually a plus in its favor. The Oreck Magnesium RS has disposable filter bags with tight seals, so the dust won’t go flying everywhere when you remove the bag. The Dyson often generates complaints that when you put the dust bin over the trash to empty it, you get a cloud of dust that coats all the surfaces around the trash can. And they give you a dozen vacuum bags when you buy the vacuum. The HEPA air filters in the vacuum bags capture everything. Not just dust but pollen, mold and smoke particles. It won’t just clean the floors but your room’s air as well.
  • The Oreck’s five year to seven year limited warranty (depending on where you get it) is better than the three year (or shorter) warranty on many Dyson vacuums. The length of the warranty depends on where you buy it.
  • The Vacuum is shipped and sold by Amazon.com (Not a third party seller on Amazon) so is covered by the Oreck Warranty
  • It has a very long cord, but the power cord insertion can be awkward.

Weaknesses of the Oreck Magnesium RS

  • Oreck Magnesium RSIt isn’t self-propelled. In theory, this means it takes more force to push around the room. However, its light weight means the fact that it isn’t self propelled won’t matter. And due to its large wheels you can even easily guide it through very thick carpets.
  • This vacuum is louder than a Dyson vacuum.
  • You have to put more maintenance into this vacuum than some of its competitors. For example, you’ll need to change the belts sometimes and unclog the beater bar in addition to replacing the bags.
  • It doesn’t have a detachable hose to use when you want to vacuum in a corner the side brushes won’t get. It has no attachments for vacuuming upholstery or curtains.

Observations

The Oreck Magnesium RS is officially $600 but you can often find it new for as little as $500. Sites like Amazon frequently offer free shipping on top of the purchase price.

One detail I need to note in this Oreck Magnesium RS review is that it is actually hard to find this vacuum cleaner. Sites like Amazon often sell out as soon as the model goes on sale. Popularity isn’t a bad thing unless it means you can’t find one without paying full price.
